The actual name Bred\u00e5ker is not entirely clear, but may allude to the character of the place with wide fields. Here the village emerged as a small farming community where barley and rye were important crops. The villagers kept livestock and supplemented their livelihood with hunting and fishing. Some traces of older times are a number of Norrbotten farms dating back to the 17th century, and the custom of appointing a village elder and holding an annual village meeting. In 1968 Bred\u00e5ker got its own parish hall, which since 1996 has been known as Bred\u00e5ker Church. On the initiative of some villagers, the church got its own belfry, built from timber from thirteen landowners and donations from villagers. The stack was inaugurated on All Saints&#8217; Day, October 31, 1998.
