The oldest buildings are thought to date back to the 12th century. According to legend, the village was named after a Bi\u00f6rn Swarte. An alternative explanation is that <em>bj\u00f6rn<\/em> comes from<em> bjur<\/em>, meaning beaver, which is why the name <em>Svartbj\u00f6rsbyn<\/em> is also used.<\/p>\n\n<p>Together with Lomb\u00e4cken, Mocktr\u00e4sk, Norra Svartbyn, Buddbyn, Unbyn and V\u00e4ndtr\u00e4sk, Svartbj\u00f6rnsbyn is part of the so-called S\u00f6derbyarna. As a curiosity, a species of sweet pea has been named after the village of Svartbj\u00f6rns.
