A few kilometers northeast of the city center is Björkelund, a mature residential area with narrow, winding streets and variegated, older wooden houses. The area is quiet and child-friendly with proximity to hiking and bird watching areas. In a younger part of the area there is a cluster of more modern villas. Björkelund offers a safe and inspiring environment, which may explain why many cultural practitioners live and work here. There is also a unique cultural destination: the baker’s cottage where writer and Nobel Prize winner Eyvind Johnson was born. The cottage is run as a museum by the Eyvind Johnson Society, which organizes a variety of activities in the summer.

Born and raised in Boden, he has depicted several of his childhood environments in his books. In summer, the bakery where he was born can be visited. (The building was previously part of a larger farm property that was demolished in the 1970s). The cottage is now a museum run by the Eyvind Johnson Society. In summer, the association organizes guided tours and sells coffee and books. Every year on July 29, the author's birthday is celebrated with lectures and musical events. For those interested in literature, there is an opportunity to take a walking tour in the footsteps of the author. The signposted walk starts at the railway station and ends at the pedestrian zone.

About the area

Björkelund was originally pasture land with a number of farms. In the first half of the 20th century, the area developed as the railroad was built and the city expanded. The area was found interesting because it was not part of the urban plan, which gave more freedom to build according to one’s own taste and budget. Streets were stepped up as new houses were built, creating the characteristic patchwork of narrow, winding streets. The houses, built over a long period, came to reflect the architectural styles of several eras, from turn-of-the-century mansion ideals to 1940s funkiness. In the near future, new developments are planned in the surrounding area to meet the need for housing for newly arrived steel mill workers.
