Norriån is a small village located on the Livasälven river about 6 miles north of Boden, “where the asphalt road ends” and where the northern lights are particularly strong. Lakes with fanciful names surround the village: Stor-Lappträsket, Mörtträsket and Grundträsket and the smaller lakes Lappen, Vintervägstjärnen, Nedre Tjuven and Håkanstjärnen. Mörtträskbäcken flows through the village with a preserved mill from the 19th century. The settlement is characterized by red-painted houses that were built in the 40s and 50s with the help of affordable housing loans. There are also some holiday homes. The village is characterized by tranquillity and proximity to old, species-rich forests. The availability of reindeer lichen makes the area important for reindeer husbandry. A mobile phone mast has recently been erected, which will give the village access to 5G networks. About 60 people live in the village.

  • 1. High nature values The village is surrounded by several lakes and streams and preserved primeval forest. Eleven kilometers away is the Blåkölen nature reserve, one of the county's most valuable spruce forests. As the village is the center of a sameby, there are periodically many reindeer in the area. The overnight cabins in Djupviken and Spiken/Furudal, which can be booked through Råek (Råne älvdals ekonomiska förening), offer an appreciated opportunity to experience nature.
  • 2. Fish-rich lakes The lakes in the vicinity of the village are rich in fish, with species such as zander, pike, perch, grayling and salmon trout. The Spikälven is a popular fishing river and the northern and southern Blåkölsbäckarna streams contain trout.
  • 3. Community life The village association's meetings bring together many of the residents and the association organizes activities such as coffee breaks and waffle days.
  • 4. Village hall The village hall is accessible and offers both overnight accommodation and shower facilities. There is both a stage and a kitchen.
  • 5. Beach There is a child-friendly sandy beach at Stora Lappträsket about 4 km south of the village.

About the area

The first settlers in the area were hunters and fishermen who moved to the banks of Grundträsket in the 18th century. The industries that emerged and that long characterized the area were forestry, reindeer husbandry and rafting. Until the 1960s there was a shop, post office and school. On the other side of the Livasälven river, the so-called Malmens väg ran for a long time. Here, ore was transported from the Gällivare mine to Avafors by horse and reindeer. Today the route serves as a popular snowmobile trail.
