Svartbyn is mentioned in the 1543 land register as one of several villages in Överluleå parish. At this time, the village consisted of a few farms scattered along the Svartbyträsket. With the expansion of the city in the 1960s and 70s, agricultural land close to the city was increasingly developed. The northern part of the village retained its rural character, while the southern side was transformed into a modern villa town with a lakeside location. Until the 1980s, Svartbyträsket was used for both fishing and swimming, but for various reasons the water quality deteriorated, resulting in extensive algal blooms. For a number of years, an ambitious effort has been underway to restore the biological balance with the vision of a living swimming and fishing lake.
